Introducing This Is My Jam: The Spotify App

August 9, 2012

Spotify has over 17 million tracks. This Is My Jam shares one song at a time from each user. What are these two doing together? Actually, it’s a match made in heaven.

This Is My Jam announced a first-of-its-kind Spotify app today, marrying the speed and comprehensiveness of Spotify to This Is My Jam’s “slow music” approach. In case you haven’t used it yet, This Is My Jam (incubated by The Echo Nest) encourages people to hand-pick one song at a time to share with their friends — whatever song best represents their musical passion at that particular moment.

If we had to sum it up in a sentence, we’d call this service “Instagram for music,” although that doesn’t quite do it justice. At its core, This Is My Jam is about returning focus to our love for music — an approach that should work incredibly well as a means of filtering Spotify’s 17-million-plus songs.

Spotify users who install the This Is My Jam app from the Spotify App Finder starting today will be able to listen, quite literally, to This Is My Jam users’ taste. Jam’s website only lets you post one song at a time to share with the world; in a sense, the Spotify version adds a memory to that experience. It lets you listen to all of someone’s jams and likes in playlist form — and you can even add the playlist to your own Spotify collection (an especially nice feature if you’re following a celebrity, a crush, or both). Basically, it gives past Jams somewhere to live, but that’s not all.

The Spotify version of This Is My Jam also introduces you to like-minded Jam users based on what you listen to in Spotify, so you can hear what they’ve been posting, and follow them within the service. It’s like having tightly-curated, personalized radio stations created by people with musical taste similar to yours. It’s also a great way to meet new people to follow on the web version of This Is My Jam.

Whether you’ve ever used This Is My Jam before or not, this new Spotify version has a lot to offer, so we suggest you try it for yourself and find out. We’re excited to see what happens as this unique creation rolls out to millions of Spotify users around the world.
